Men’s Place: Words

Psalm 19:14

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Men Should Speak Wisely

King David wanted his words to always please God. It is a great goal, but not easy to practice. As I think about my own past, quick responding and profusely used words, I can say without a doubt that I did not speak every word to the glory of God. I speak often and that is NOT always a good thing.

If your career or ministry requires public speaking, as does mine, then you will need and should aspire to have great control over your words. The problem I have is controlling my speech OUTSIDE of planned sermons, lectures, and meetings. It is my every day, conversational words that lack self-control, more often than I like to admit. You may find this the case for yourself.

Men of few words, and I have known them, are hard to come by and even more difficult to communicate with if you are a fast talking, type A personality; but those men do seem to have a bit more confidence and peace, if I am being truly honest. Why? Because they are slow to speak and quick to listen, (James 1:19) choosing their words carefully and thoughtfully. I respect that. God EXPECTS that!

This month we celebrate Father’s Day. As fathers, if we are, we are to be most careful and intentional with our words, so they strengthen our family, equip our church members and ultimately honor God.

Even God Himself, our Heavenly Father, gave us the bible as a complete conversation for our entire Christian lives. He spoke the book by the Spirit and added nothing more. As Jesus, He also spoke only words that resounded as life and spirit. God does not waste words, neither does He speak them in haste.

This month, I will actually be making this letter…. brief. (Miracles can and do happen!)

Wise words never come from reaction, but from careful thought and consideration.

Let us consider our words this month as Father’s, Husbands and bothers in Christ, and as men!
